IN TOUCH WITH GOD    by Edward Heppenstall

Keeping Spirituality Alive SEPTEMBER 29

HOLD FAST TO SOUND WORDS

Hold fast the form of sound words . . . in faith and love which is in Christ Jesus. That good thing . . . committed unto thee keep by the Holy Ghost which dwelleth in us. 2 Tim. 1:13, 14.

In matters of Christian living, people often think that what they believe does not matter; that vagueness in truth, ignorance of the Word of God, is tolerable. They attend churches without testing that which the church believes. They continue year after year with a bare minimum of Bible truth, building their hopes for eternal life on a shallow foundation.

In the last days it is particularly fitting that we all should be drawn to study the truth of God's Word. As the enemy of souls changes and varies his mode of attack, he introduces more and more counterfeits. And the more he does that, the more we must stand firm upon the truths that can never he shaken. The need for a clearer knowledge of God's Word must awaken in us the acknowledgment, "That means me."

There is a great variety of minds and people among Christians. There are differences of age, education, and natural ability. The learned and the ignorant, the parent and the child, meet together, all of us sinners saved by grace. As one class needs the "milk of the word," others desire strong meat. It is of great moment, however, that we all seek to understand the Word of God. The charge that people "are destroyed for lack of knowledge" is serious indeed.

The whole Bible is intended to be an unfolding of the plan of salvation to every reader. From Genesis to Revelation the purpose of the Bible writers is to impress us with a sense of the need for God and His gift of salvation. The Bible is adaptable to all classes. The truths are to be enjoyed by the simplest intellect, while at the same time God's Word furnishes exhaustless themes for the profoundest minds.

The Word of God is the bread of life. Through His Word we all may live in daily communion with the living God and hear His voice speak to us. "Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth" (2 Tim. 2:15). Let its not settle for milk all our lives, but for the meat of the Word. This is essential for our spiritual maturity and stability.
